L’interprétation consécutive est un mode d’interprétation où l’orateur s’arrête à la fin d’une pensée complète pour permettre à l’interprète d’intervenir et de prononcer le même discours dans la langue cible. C’est la solution idéale et pratique pour les événements plus petits et plus intimes où l’on ne parle pas plus de deux langues.

L’interprétation consécutive est très populaire, car elle ne nécessite pas d’équipement spécialisé ou de planification complexe. Toutefois, les interprètes consécutifs trouveront toujours utile que vous leur fournissiez des informations générales sur le sujet ou l’entreprise et ses produits bien avant la mission. Fournissez des avant-projets de discours et/ou expliquez tout le vocabulaire spécialisé. L’interprétation consécutive est préférable pour les sorties, les négociations, les visites sur place, les voyages, les examens médicaux, les séminaires, les dépositions et les procès.

Simultaneous interpreting is the process of listening to, comprehending, and instantaneously translating a speaker’s statements into another language. Simultaneous interpreters convert what is said in real-time. There are no pauses in conversation.

This method of interpreting is generally used in large-scale conferences, international meetings and international events when two or more languages are spoken. The speaker speaks the “floor language” into a microphone. The floor language is broadcast directly to an interpreter who listens through a headset in a soundproof booth. The interpreter simultaneously speaks into a microphone in the “target language” which is broadcast to delegates through wireless headsets. This allows for delegates to understand what is being said in real time, as though the presenter were speaking to them directly in their native language.

Organising an event that requires simultaneous interpreting will call for a lot of equipment. You’ll need microphones, headsets, receivers and booths to name just a few. This kind of interpreting is not ideal for face-to-face communications like interviews, appointments, trainings…

Sometimes in a group there is just one person requiring interpretation.
In this case, an interpreter can be seated behind the person and whisper the interpretation into their ear. This is what is known in the profession as whispering. This technique is also known by its French name chuchotage. The interpreter sits next to, between or behind the participants and literally whispers a summary of what is being said.
